What is a freestyle session?
A freestyle session is a 30, 45, 60, or 90-minute session where the general public is not allowed on the ice. Skaters practice and perform powerful jumps and spins at high speeds on these sessions; therefore, all skaters must be aware, alert and focused to participate. Some sessions even require skaters to be at a certain freestyle level of skating.
Advantages of a freestyle session vs. a public session:
- More sessions to choose from
- Fewer skaters
- Ability to play program music
- Use of the full ice surface
- No restrictions on elements that can be practiced
- Private lessons available
- Opportunity to work on program choreography
General rules and etiquette for a freestyle session:
- The skater playing their music has the first right of way
- Skaters in lessons have 2nd right of way
- All skaters must take turns playing music (coaches have priority)
- Be considerate of everyone on the ice
- Be safe around younger skaters
- Exit the ice to talk so you are not in the way of other skaters
